Although the recent return of interest on the object of political representation, the role of legislators in Italy is still rather neglected in the analyses. This article aims at formulating a new research agenda on this theme, focusing on the use that legislators make of their territorial mandate and of different communication strategies. The first part of the article is dedicated to some key concepts like territorialisation and personalisation of politics and also constituency service. In the second part a wide overview on data from different researches is provided, in order to explore the changes which would have denoted the ten years of application of a mixed-majoritarian electoral system for the election of the Italian parliament. The conclusions briefly discuss the implications of this experience, stressing the links between territorial representation, majority government and multi-level governance. Such a discussion brings to the definition of a number of relevant dimensions of parliamentary representation, which will have to be debated in Italy (and in comparative perspective) whatever will be the electoral system used in the future.
