The recent political, economic and social changes in the EU make agricultural competitiveness and unavoidable choice for farmers whose strategies need to be supported by sound policies. The CAP reform has strengthened the regional dimension of the concept and emphasized the key role of rural development interventions. In this context, the article, focused on the regional level, is aimed at: understanding the characters assumed by competitiveness according to the MTR; elaborating suitable indicators for its analysis referred to productivity, diversification, innovation and sustainability; classifying the EU-15 regions at NUTS2 level in homogeneous groups according to a multi-dimensional selection criterion based on the explanatory variables selected. The study not only has important policy implications but it also introduces the regional perspective of analysis.
