The paper explains the research activities conducted on the architectural artifacts preservation of the archaeological excavations at Kınık Höyük (South Cappadocia, Turkey). The excavations began in 2011 and it have brought to light noumerous architectural artifacts of an urban settlement. The artifacts are made of stone or mud materials and when they were exposed to the weathering and to the variations in temperature and in pressure of the external environment, they have started to show signs of a progressive decay. An investigation on the building techniques was started with the aim to understand the behaviour of the original building structures, and a diagnostic campaign has been begun with the aim to characterize the building materials (XRD analysis on powder of materials), and in particular it has been studied the mixture of the mud building materials. This investigation has been put in place in order to conduct a preservation design compatible with the historical materials. Since 2014 the research group conducts also the design of the temporal shelters for the operations of the archaeological site, confronting some complexties (impossibility of underground foundations, difficulty in finding building materials, lack of large funding and time).
