The problem of representing and “remembering” republican history in the Roman Empire is here reconsidered with a particular emphasis on the age of Tiberius. The image of a “republican” Tiberius, which we owe to R. Syme and above all to A. M. Gowing’s studies, appears particularly questionable if one attempts to review two key episodes of the Tiberian principate : Augustus’ funeral, in which Tiberius’ main concern is not to repeat what had happened when Julius Caesar had been murdered, and the discussion with Asinius Gallus on the nature of power in the first book of Tacitus’ annales. In both cases, far from showing continuity with the pre-Augustan past, Tiberius exhibits a quasi-censorial attitude towards the memory of the republican experience.
