Abstract

The diffusion of the Internet and its associated technological developments and has already made “virtual” most of our social interactions; the so called “netizens” commonly purchase goods, read books and magazines, learn and work on the network with minimal interaction with real places. Despite this trend, many researchers have pointed out the relevant importance of social and environmental interactions in learning and building a cultural identity. At the same time, the diffusion of mobile wireless communication and portable devices enables new models of interaction with the social and natural environment: the Multimedia Park Project aims at the development of an infrastructure suitable for the distribution of location-referenced multimedia content to a mobile community of users within a specific and well defined cultural environment: namely urban historical gardens and natural wilderness. The project addresses technological issues (e.g. wireless network design and deployment and multimedia content storage and distribution) as well as sociological and semantic issues (e.g. definition of user profiles and multimedia information categorization).
