Benzylic amide catenanes are macromolecular interlocked rings which can rotate one through the other in dependence on the local environment, thus opening the perspective of developing switchable materials. We investigated the linear and nonlinear optical properties of catenane films formed by vacuum evaporation with spectroscopic and guided wave techniques. The nonlinear optical response is comparable to the one of carbon disulphide, what is interesting in view of the large transparency windows of the material and its processability in optical quality thin films.

Abstract
