This paper focuses on some morphologically formed affective markers from both pragmatic and cognitive perspectives, and analyses their rendition in translation. I will refer to translation as a heuristic means for a comparative analysis of linguistic systems. In translating discourse from English into a Romance language, and vice versa, the emotive dimension of speech acts may impose the recourse to means belonging to a different linguistic level. Spanish and Italian are very productive in alterative morphemes and the translation of morphopragmatic instances indicates the need for further considerations on how different languages code emotive attitudes.

Abstract

This paper focuses on some morphologically formed affective markers from both pragmatic and cognitive perspectives, and analyses their rendition in translation. I will refer to translation as a heuristic means for a comparative analysis of linguistic systems. In translating discourse from English into a Romance language, and vice versa, the emotive dimension of speech acts may impose the recourse to means belonging to a different linguistic level. Spanish and Italian are very productive in alterative morphemes and the translation of morphopragmatic instances indicates the need for further considerations on how different languages code emotive attitudes.
