The Balkan Frog, Pelophylax kurtmuelleri (Gayda, 1940), is distributed in Greece, Albania and the southern part of Macedonia. In Italy Pelophylax kurtmuelleri is a naturalized alien species since 1941 when seven pairs of frogs were introduced in Western Liguria. Since the 70s, the species has spread widely in Liguria and Piedmont. In Lombardy all the reports fall in Oltrepò Pavese area, a wedge of Lombardy in the province of Pavia, which covers approximately 1100 sq km. Here we report the rapid spread of the Pelophylax kurtmuelleri in this area from 2005 to 2010 along the streams Curone and Staffora.
