Design and execution of systems generally neglect promise to the end customer. We have considered a case study where service promise is relevant, namely a train travel. The demo solution proposed is based on an Android front-end that interacts with transaction processing systems via web services. From this case we extrapolate elements of possible paradigm for promise oriented systems: functional layers, that adds a stakeholder oriented control layer to the execution layer, the execution engine that alters the journey path depending on the promise, and the overall architecture, that includes performance management at all abstraction levels. The paper is seminal and the paradigm is tentative. Further research is going on.

Abstract

Design and execution of systems generally neglect promise to the end customer. We have considered a case study where service promise is relevant, namely a train travel. The demo solution proposed is based on an Android front-end that interacts with transaction processing systems via web services. From this case we extrapolate elements of possible paradigm for promise oriented systems: functional layers, that adds a stakeholder oriented control layer to the execution layer, the execution engine that alters the journey path depending on the promise, and the overall architecture, that includes performance management at all abstraction levels. The paper is seminal and the paradigm is tentative. Further research is going on.
