Protected Geographical Status schemes supported by the European Union are interventions whose aim is to promote agricultural products with specific characteristics, to protect product names from imitation, and to provide clear information to consumers regarding product origin. Since these programmes tend to promote traditional products made using traditional techniques, participating firms are usually constrained in the production process. The aim of the present study is to assess the impact of these schemes on the ability of firms to undertake innovation. We focus in particular on the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) Real Ale designation and we seek to identify whether the PGI scheme has had any impact on innovation by conducting structured interviews with participating breweries and other stakeholders.
