La popolarità in ambito ottocentesco del romance medievale è nota: il saggio indaga il fascino del Medioevo sui Romantici e i segni che ha lasciato nella scrittura di Mary Shelley. L’autrice ne studiò a fondo la storia italiana, attraverso gli scritti di Sismondi, Dante, Petrarca, Machiavelli, Villani, Muratori. Il frutto di tali ricerche prese varie forme nella sua produzione, dal romance storico al racconto breve, al saggio biografico. Fra le ragioni di questo interesse, al di là degli spunti offerti dai luoghi in cui l’autrice visse, dalla cronaca del tempo (le rivoluzioni abortite a Napoli e in Piemonte) e dalle letture, si analizza la motivazione profonda, legata a una forte componente autobiografica (la lezione di William Godwin), e alla volontà di indagare, della Storia, gli attori secondari, spesso figure femminili (la lezione di Mary Wollstonecraft). Il saggio mette in luce l’uso della Storia nei romanzi e nei racconti brevi ambientati in un Medioevo italiano assai ben documentato ma al contempo “familiare”. Questa ci è parsa la cifra della scrittura della Shelley. It is a well known issue with literary criticism of the Romantics that the Middle Ages was a fascinating source of inspiration for both poets and prose writers. The essay studies the marks left on Mary Shelley’s corpus by this interest, first of all analyzing the deep knowledge she had of Italian Medieval history and the large competence she was able to acquire through the study of Sismondi, Dante, Petrarca, Machiavelli, Villani, Muratori. Moreover, the use she made of such a cultural background in a variety of her works, from the short story to the historical romance to the biographical essay, is investigated. Biographical elements are also highlighted in the essay in order to justify Shelley’s interest in Italian history, namely the long years she spent in the country and her involvement with its politics. Attention is also bestowed on the great historical sensibility she inherited from her father, and indirectly from her mother, resulting in a well documented fictional rendering of Medieval Italy, in which women play a prominent role.
