Abstract

The natural composite assembly of wool, made of cortical cells embedded in a highly crosslinked, sulphur-rich keratin matrix, has been exploited to prepare keratin-based biomaterials for tissue engineering. Disruption of the wool fibre structure by ultra-sonication after mild alkali treatment, produced a suspension of cortical cells in aqueous hydrolysed protein solution, that was cast into films and sponges with perspective for tissue engineering, in particular for bone reconstruction.
