Abstract

Years of investigation have enormously expanded our knowledge of the physiological roles of amino acids, which are now considered much more than the building blocks of proteins, hormones, and low-molecular-weight nitrogenous sub- stances, but master regulators of cell signaling and gene expression and function. The complex interplay between amino acids, cell energetics and antioxidant systems, and regulatory pathways of pro- tein synthesis underlies their role in the metabolic regulation of glucose homeostasis. This physiological process, which contributes to glycemic control, has recently put forward the potential to use of die- tary supplements containing selected amino acids for prevention and treatment of pre-diabetes states and frank type 2 diabetes mellitus.
