The presentation deals with the university reform process in Italy between 1996 and 2001 and with a first evaluiation of its effects. In particular three main aspects are discussed: 1. The institutional genesis and embeddedness of reforming process, concerning its development dynamics, contents, and orientation. 2. A brief description of the reform main features (goals, contents, structure, orientation) and of the changes it is expected to produce on governance structure, didactic and curricular organization, academic culture, and university productivity; 3. A first, although rather provisional, appraisal of the reform route and effects until 2001.
