Abstract

Cabaret can be fun as long as there is a balance between contemporary criticism and comedy. The PhD thesis aims at identifying the mechanisms of humour and irony used by comedians in the early phases of the German literarisches Kabarett between Munich and Berlin. The dissertation proposes a suitable methodology to investigate the underlying ironic intention of texts. How can the reader access the author’s implicit meaning? Which are the signals underlining humor and irony within the texts? How about purposes and victims of irony? Textual linguistics and humour studies combine to answer these questions, with the principal aim of providing an overview of the strategies that have emerged.
