L’opera cinematografica di Charlie Chaplin ha dato vita ad un vero e proprio mito culturale che ha interessato critici, teorici, cineasti, studiosi ed artisti. Obiettivo del volume è quello di rileggere quale significato sia stato attribuito nel corso degli anni al cinema di Chaplin, e per estensione al cinema tout court. In altre parole, ritornare al cinema di Chaplin attraverso le affermazioni che ha prodotto, i dibattiti che ha suscitato presso intellettuali e critici che, in diversi campi, si sono sentiti chiamati in causa. Una lettura dell’opera attraverso il contesto, un’indagine stratificata nei doversi ambiti di ricezione per cogliere le reazioni e le modificazioni che ha subito, ricollegandole a un senso più generale sull’identità del cinema. The work of Charlie Chaplin film has created a veritable cultural myth that has interested critics, theorists, filmmakers, scholars and artists. The aim of this book is to read what significance has been attributed over the years to the films of Chaplin, and by extension to the cinema. In other words, the research goes back to the films of Chaplin through the statements that he produced, through the debates aroused among intellectuals and critics in different fields, who felt called into question. The goal is to read the work of Chaplin through the stratified context of reception, in order to capture the reactions and the changes it has undergone, and reconnect them to a more general sense the identity of cinema.
