The aim of this paper is to highlight the contribution that large scale international surveys such as the Changing Academic Profession survey give to a better understanding of the international dimension of the academic profession . It focuses on three main issues: 1. The internationalisation of the academic profession as a multi-dimensional phenomenon; 2. The internationalisation of the academic profession as an unequal phenomenon; 3. The internationalisation of the academic profession as a changing phenomenon.
