The relevance of the relationships between Italian universities and regional economies has been pointed out by: the persistent regional disparities and differences characterising Italian economy, the increasing relevance of knowledge production and innovation, the strong difficulties facing the Italian economic system before and after the 2008 financial crisis, the interaction of these processes with two decades of policy initiatives aiming at reforming Italian higher education. The paper aims at presenting a research project studying the relationship between universities and the economic sector, and the regional differences within these relations.
