The aim of the chapter is to focus on changes have occurred in the last 25 in the higher education systems (HESs), which have been making traditional analytical distinctions used in the comparative studies on HESs no more fully appropiated. In so doing it focuses on four HESs which have shown historically different institutional characteristics, namely Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK (in particular England). Three issues are considered as cucial to assess changes occured: a) public and private funding streams; b) the national and institutional govrenace structure; c) impacts on academic work and career.
