This contribution aims at a stock-taking of Italian research regarding the internationalization of SMEs in Italy and to put it in context with the knowledge received from international scholars. It is based on a review of the extant literature and on statistical reports, and aims to cluster the different topics, findings and perspectives into key relevant research areas. The latter are defined according to the need of assembling and systematically grouping research and statistical sources with the purpose of elaborating research propositions. At the same time these propositions target some research gaps and controversial issues in the literature and some relevant issues for the practice of management and for policy-makers.

Abstract
