The electronic structure of the layer insulator MgCl2 has been calculated by the intersecting spheres model, using two different approximations of the exchange potential. From the calculated band structures it is possible to draw some suggestions for the interpretation of the X-ray absorption spectra of this crystal, which were obtained years ago and are still waiting for an explanation.

Abstract

The electronic structure of the layer insulator MgCl2 has been calculated by the intersecting spheres model, using two different approximations of the exchange potential.
