The paper verifies the potential competitiveness of the world agricultre by region. Furthermore, within the Western Europa the role of Member States of the EU-15 is underlined. The traditional approach of analysis based on the relative trade position and the standardized balance, is implemented by the empirical evidence of more specific indicators; the relative trade advantage index, the relative comparative advantage index and the intra trade industry index. The analysis refers to the period 1990-2000 and puts forward some preliminary hypothesis on the distribution of the costs and benefits connected to the trade liberalization process among regions and Member States of the EU-15.
