Competence is becoming a central notion in education. Teachers are more and more urged to design activities aiming at promoting the development of competences and their assessment. In this article we will discuss the notion of competence highlighting its great complexity. Then we will raise the question – often overlooked in educational literature – how to combine the development of competences and the construction of knowledge in mathematics. And we will show examples drawn from educational research in mathematics which provide precious suggestions on that point.

Abstract
