Device-to-device (D2D) communication has been proposed as a solution to facilitate high data rate applications among nearby devices, to improve spectrum utilization and the overall throughput. We envision a social-cognitive architecture as a candidate solution for D2D communication, where the devices not only share content but also the identified available channels in a novel social way. Some of the traÿc load can thus be managed by D2D peers thanks to their cognitive capabilities and social sharing. Moreover, it is possible to reduce some intensive operations of the cognitive cycle, such as the sensing operation, since the sharing information is less energy demanding. The main features of the social cognitive architecture for D2D communication are presented. Moreover, the existing state of the art is described, as well as the research challenges, and a new procedure for an energy eÿcient social information sharing and resource allocation.
