In this section is presented a research proposal. The 5-year project has begun its preliminary phase, which could be considered as initial stage of a long-term program. The short term goals of the project is to move beyond the knowledge of the articulated architectural and social evolution of the rural towns, looking at the local and global challenges, the need for continuous adaptation, and experiences of resilience which the rural suburbs of Shanghai faces today, and for which it will be a valid paradigm for Western cities. In the long term, this project hopes to enhance rural resilience and balance the climate change in rural-urban China with obvious impacts on the global level. The proposed project involves too many different forms of expertise to receive financing from a single national body to be able to finance it. Given the enormous interest that EU has in working hand-in-hand with China, the time is ripe to come to a thorough understanding of its rural-urban evolution. Specifically our team needs to move on this idea forward and to do that we seek funding for Post-doc researcher and PhD students which are expected to start in the beginning of the project and will be actively involved in the creation of pilot projects in China. My research group and I are focused with determination, with resolve, in the knowledge that the task is not, in terms of research, an easy one, but that it is possible.
