This essay deals with the debate held in Italy over the early decades of 20th century about the consequences of the lack of religious Reform in that country. It aims at considering such debate in the frame of a long-term historical perspective, starting from the years prior to the unification of Italy up to our time. The essay also endeavors to highlight the role of Hegelian reception in such debate, as well as the role of German culture in a wider sense. It aims at showing the European range of such debate, which crosses the borders of the Italian country, stemming from suggestions contained in the writings of Antonio Gramsci
