US are the commonest imaging modality and the first approach to liver imaging. Unfortunately the discover of an unsuspected solid liver lesion rarely allows a specific diagnosis at US alone and frequently leads to other imaging modalities, where the use of intravascular contrast agents is routine. Contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is actually a useful tool to improve the US performance by 20-35% during both lesion detection and characterization. CEUS is commonly used to assess the efficacy of interventional oncology procedures permitting to easily distinguish viable from necrotic tumor tissue. In more recent studies CEUS seems able to assess the efficacy of new anti-neoangiogenetic cancer therapies allowing to distinguish good responders from bad responders before and better than CT or MRI.
