For the 70th anniversary of the entry into force of the Republican Constitution in 1948, the essay, written in English, traces Italian constitutional history with particular attention to the genesis of the Republican Constitution in relation to the Albertine Statute, which in 1861 had become the first Constitutional Charter of United Italy under the Savoy monarchy. The contribution is the reworking of the first part of the conference "Reflections on the Constitution of the Italian Republic on Its Seventieth Birthday", held at the Stanford University of Florence on November 14, 2018.
