Abstract

Starting with the debatable and discussed term of populism, the essay deepens the contemporary political drift in which people, rather than a political subject, become an object, a commodity of exchange. The illusion of direct democracy, as it is represented and unmasked in the Knights, is re-proposed to the attention of an audience not always willing to look and understand what is happening on stage. For Aristophanes and for us, paying too much attention people seems to coincide with the extreme degradation of politics that has betrayed its tasks and has taken ugly folds, like the “dirty and somewhat loose shoes” of Giorgio Gaber.
