Two complexing resins containing iminodiacetic and carboxylic groups have been examined as sensors for the determination of free metal ion concentration at low level (RS method). The free metal ion concentration is proportional to the concentration of metal ion adsorbed in the resin phase. Free metal ion concentrations as low as 10^(-18) mol/l were determined for copper (II), and 10^(-14) mol/l for lead(II) in solutions containing known ligands. The concentrations obtained by RS method were in agreement with those calculated from the literature constants. The method was applied to the free copper (II) determination in natural waters of high and low salinity.
