Quando il cinema brucia. Incendi e catastrofi nei cinematografi dei primi tempi

Il saggio prende in considerazione la sala cinematografica nei primi trent’anni del Novecento – periodo che ne segna la nascita, lo sviluppo e la stabilizzazione – focalizzando l’attenzione sulle catastrofi, gli incidenti e i fatti traumatici che fanno del cinema un luogo spesso pericoloso. Attraverso una ricerca condotta sulla stampa generalista e di settore vengono individuati dapprima gli incendi e le disgrazie più salienti del periodo, e analizzati i modi con cui essi sono narrati. Dai racconti di tali fait divers emergono le paure che ancora circondano il cinema come luogo di aggregazione di folle che possono comportarsi in modo irrazionale o pericoloso di fronte a eventi inattesi come calamità e incidenti, e che richiamano l’importanza di adeguate condizioni di sicurezza. Con il passare degli anni, anche ciò che viene proiettato sullo schermo talvolta influenza – in modo negativo e violento – i comportamenti delle audiences, sancendo la loro trasformazione da folle a pubblici. The essay considers the movie theatres in the first thirty years of the twentieth century - a period that marked their birth, development and stabilization - focusing on the catastrophes, accidents and traumatic events that make the cinema an often dangerous place. A research conducted in the generalist and trade press identifies the most salient fires and misfortunes of the period, drawing a particular attention to the ways in which they are narrated. The storytelling of these “fait divers” reveal the fears that still surround the cinema as a place of gathering of crowds that can behave in an irrational or dangerous way in the face of unexpected events such as disasters and accidents, and that recall the importance of adequate safety conditions. As the years go by, even what is projected on the screen sometimes influences - in a negative and violent way - the audiences’ behaviour, sanctioning their transformation from crowds to audiences.
