The essay focuses on the problems involved in the translation of the noun ousia in some Platonic dialogues. The analysis of the occurences shows that ousia can mean, depending on the context, a) being in the sense “to be something”, b) being as eternal, uniform, identical, changless and perfect reality of the Forms, and c) “essence”.
