This article analyses the concept of transmutatio corporalis within Aquinas’ theory of passions. It analyzes above all the Treatise on passions included in the Summa Theologiae, but also other texts of the Dominican master: the Commentary on the Sentences, the Disputed Questions on Truth, the brief treatise On the Movement of the Heart. First of all it shows how much the idea of transmutatio corporalis is essential for the Aquinas’ definition of passion, then it identifies what constitutes bodily modification in the main passions of the Aquinas’system. It concludes with an analysis of the transmutatio corporalis in the dynamics between soul and body, stopping in particular on the idea of redundantia, that is, the circular process through which the soul modifies the body and the modification of the body intervenes to modify the soul.
