Rhythmic movement disorder (RMD) consists of repetitive, stereotyped, rhythmic movements (RMs) that occur near sleep onset or during sustained, non-rapid eye movement (NREM), and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The pathophysiology of RMD is still unknown; together with behavioral and psychophysiological mechanisms, attention has been recently drawn to the possible role of central pattern generators (CPGs) in causing RMD. The diagnosis of RMD can be established on clinical findings alone. Precise criteria have been set for RMs to be considered an RMD. Clonazepam at bedtime has proved to be helpful; psychotherapy may be useful for psychological distress as a consequence of RMs or as a preexisting comorbidity.
