Abstract

The first complete optimization of quantum tomography, for states, positive operator value measures, and various classes of transformations, for arbitrary prior ensemble and arbitrary representation, is presented. Corresponding feasible experimental schemes in terms of random Bell measurements are given.

Calibration of physical devices is the basis of any experimental procedure, especially when the reliability of the processes involved is crucial. Quantum tomography is the complete determination of physical devices in a purely experimental manner, without using detailed theoretical knowledge of its inner functioning. In this paper the authors apply the new optimization method of "quantum combs" of Chiribella, D'Ariano, Perinotti derive the first optimal scheme for quantum tomography of processes, states and measurements. This work has been published in Physical Review Letters which is considered to be one of the most prestigious journal in the field of physics, according to various measurement standards, which includes the Journal Citation Reports impact factor. This work has been presented at numerous conferences and has been subject of an invited review published on IEEE transaction on quantum electronics. See also: http://www.qubit.it
