Nowadays more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas and it is expected to increase by more than two thirds by 2050. The speed of urban growth, the continuously changing of citizens’ needs and the modifications of external and internal conditions create heavy pressures on urban environment, urban structure, social system and human health. In the contemporary urban context, seen as a complex and dynamic system with low sustainable performances, it is essential to find new methods and application techniques that will be able to integrate the use of natural solutions increasing ecosystem resilience and urban ecological quality. Among all, Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are actions to protect, sustainably manage and restore natural ecosystems in different temporal horizons that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits. The paper aims to underline the cultural connection between NBS and the contemporary key issues of the urban science debate. In particular, it highlights how NBS can positively affect urban resilience and how perfectly match with the fundamental themes of flexible city.
