A numerical model for the automatic simulation of the moving saturated front in a porous medium is presented. The method avoids the difficulties of front trekking employing discontinuous functions of the solution to transform the linear problem on a variable integration domain into a nonlinear problem on a fixed domain. The method is easy to implement and provides a fast and effective evaluation of the moving saturation front in problems where the horizontal and vertical scales are comparable and therefore the Dupuit approximation is not applicable.

Abstract
