This book is about how the spatial structure of the community of Siping Road in Shanghai works in real life and how can be imagined in the future. So, we have started to observe and understand common and ordinary things, what can be called the real world of Siping community. We think that this is the starting point and perhaps the only way to discover what principles of design and innovation can promote social and economic vitality in the urban community (we could say cities). Focusing on the experience of Siping community does not mean address the research toward the typical, the individual or the single case. It means instead to recognize the manifestation of indicators of transformation that are taking place in this context, with implications and impacts on the whole urban fabric and show general trends for future changes. In other words, the part – the neighborhood - is standing for the whole – the city.
