Abstract

The environmental concept of Nature Based Solutions (NBS) has recently been identified worldwide as a strategic framework to help the development goal for sustainable cities. NBS are widely recognized as effective responses to new urban challenges such as climate change adaptation, resilience and sustainability and that can have the potential to simultaneously meet environmental, social and economic objectives. They are actions, already well known, inspired by, supported by or copied from nature; both using and enhancing existing solutions to challenges, as well as exploring more novel solutions for re-naturing cities and urban communities. This concept is applied for the course Project Research: Industrial Report - Environmental Design which is part of the Shanghai Joint Design Studio and the main aim is the urban regeneration, renewal and reuse of the area comprised between Siping Road and Chifeng Road near to Tongji University main campus, for the creation of a new Tongji Knowledge Economy Zone.
