Between the eighteenth and nineteenth century the descriptions of ancient European travelers have accompanied us in a journey of knowledge about distant lands of the Latin American Continent. Colombia since the late eighteenth century has been the destination of many scientists, explorers and botanists for the special climatic conditions which, always, have favored the spontaneous growth of vegetation with important medical properties. From the mid-twentieth century the travelers were replaced by tourists, temporary residents of towns and villages that over time have changed their urban, architectural and cultural characteristics, also to meet the needs of foreign audiences. This has changed the meaning and the value of the trip. The paper intends to analyze the urban development of the Cartagena’s City for to focus on the historical transition that has led the change from fishing town to the resort town. Particular attention will be given to specific projects and urban renovation and to the transformation of the city due to of the elite holiday who tries to coexist with the cultural theme and then with the many monuments that make this city one of the main tourist attractions from around the world.
