The paper analyzes the demonstratives in the Itinerarium Egeriae using the notion of “engagement”. The analysis of all occurrences of iste, hic, ipse and illeshows that their distribu-tion is motivated by factors related to the Speaker’s presuppo-sitions concerning the accessibility of a referent/state of affairs on the Addressee’s part. On a cline, istepresupposes no shared knowledge, whereas illepresupposes the maximum degree of intersubjective coordination. The latter data contributes to ex-plaining the development of illeinto definite article as a case of intersubjectification.
