In 16th-century Pavia, the large sites of the two colleges Borromeo and Ghislieri, both designed by Pellegrino Tibaldi, newly encouraged building activity in that city, in a period of serious crisis that had lasted from the battle of 1525. Construction on the Cathedral site also received new attention from Bishop Ippolito de’ ‘Rossi, but these phases of Renaissance construction, which had dragged on slowly since the beginning of the century, have been little explored. The paper aims to investigate these three cases in the light of archival evidence with the aim of identifying protagonists, methods and materials as well as understanding how the design choices were reflected in the stone materials used.
