If improvisation in "ottava rima" (endecasillables in 8 verses) has been largely analysed by Italian scholars as regards musical and sonic expression, an important part of their performance has been neglected: body communication. Thanks to many years of documentation through video, I was able to analyse the bodily expressions of several poets and realize how it is an important part of the performance. Moreover, it also allows us to better understand how young poets learn how to improvise. In this contribution I will give an overview of my study and provide some video examples.
