Abstract

There is no doubt that Spanish and Portuguese sailors in 1542 had landed for the first time in the Japanese archipelago at the eastern end of the Asian continent. Probably other European communities, perhaps Dutch, had already crossed the borders of these lands, but only from the middle of the sixteenth century did the first important trade exchanges between East and West begin.
