In this paper we investigate the diverse approaches according to which the history of the phenomenological-existential current of psychiatry has been outlined up to now. Starting from drawing a general overview of the most recent research in the field of history of psychiatry and, more specifically, of the methods and the topics of the archival investigation, we try to answer the following questions: what should be considered as a “source” for the history of existential psychiatry? Which kind of traces did this current leave in private and public archives? How can they be used by researchers, in order to write a history of this current? After analyzing some of the most relevant attempts to account for this task, we eventually suggest new historiographical directions for future research.
