The paper investigates two cases of revival of the Paolo Giovio's Museo in Lombardy in early 17th century: the gallery of the marquis Pompeo Litta in Gambolò castle and the "museolo" or "studiolo" of the scholar Girolamo Bossi, professor at the University of Pavia. The two collections of portraits of illustrious men are analysed in order to understand the different and multiform fortunes of Giovio's model as a "fame machine".
