The present paper focuses on Ar. Ran. 1108-10, with particular attention to the recurrent use of the adjective λεπτός as ‘subtle, intellectually sophisticated’. Although the Chorus applies it to both contenders during the agon, the adjective fits Euripides better than Aeschylus. The latter is indeed characterised in comedy by an imagery implying βαρύ της. This apparent incongruity can be explained in light of comic and theatrical dynamics.

Abstract
The present paper focuses on Ar. Ran. 1108-10, with particular attention to the recurrent use of the adjective λεπτός as ‘subtle, intellectually sophisticated’. Although the Chorus applies it to both contenders during the agon, the adjective fits Euripides better than Aeschylus. The latter is indeed characterised in comedy by an imagery implying βαρύ της. This apparent incongruity can be explained in light of comic and theatrical dynamics.File in questo prodotto:
