This paper investigates the exceptional use of γράφω (“to write”) referred to Homer in Philemon, fr. 99 K.-A. The fragment is analysed and interpreted in the light of its con- temporary cultural framework, namely book culture from the 4th century bc and the importance of Homer in the school programme. The aim of the paper is to show that Philemon’s employ of the verb γράφω for Homer by the end of the 4th century bc was a reflection of his contemporary cultural environment.
