The paper focuses on the border between Lazio and Campania, where the sources place Volsci, Aurunci and Sidicini. The coast between the Circeo Promontory and the mouth of Volturno, and the Middle Liri Valley with its Apennine inland offshoot, were connected by a complex hydrographic system and characterised by marshes. Important pre-Roman places of worship were located in marshy areas, including the Sanctuary of Marica at the mouth of Garigliano. Aim of the paper is to analyse these places in their intentional connection with the environment, considering the sacred landscape as a sum of natural and anthropogenic elements. These places can provide information on the ‘self-perception’ and ‘self-representation’ of the societies.
