This introduction to the collected essays consists of 3 chapters. The first proposes a definition for the word «fragment» and endorses the use of the English-derived neologism «frammentologia» in Italian. The second chapter focuses on the fragmentological experiences in Italy and describes the research project FRAGMINE, aimed at the systematic recovery and study of vernacular fragments in Western Lombardy and Eastern Piedmont and at the reconstruction of the dispersed manuscripts they belonged to. In the third chapter, the link between FRAGMINE and the present collection of essays is explained and the papers are briefly introduced.
